A New Vision: Hopeful Perspective on the Future

Sept 30 - Oct 3
Tues - Fri 10 - noon

From our usual way of seeing, the future may seem uncertain and frightening. If, however, we move from our ordinary, self-centered perspective to a new way of seeing, a different vision may emerge – one of unitary life everywhere. As we perceive the nature of the world through insight and intuitive awareness, we may see a view of the future for which we are inspired to work and to help create. Donations welcome.

Joy Mills, MA, an international lecturer for the Theosophical Society, has held numerous positions within the Society, including President of the American and Australian Sections; International Vice President; Director, School of the Wisdom, Adyar, India; and Director, Krotona School of Theosophy. Weekend Exploration
Individual, Society and Transformation

Oct 3 - 5
Fri 7:30 - 9, Sat 10 - noon, 2 – 4, Sun 10 - noon

Human society is the way it is because we are the way we are; violence in the world reflects violence in the individual. Attempts to control that violence through law do not eliminate the causes because governmental controls affect only the symptoms, not the disease. Furthermore, education as we know it does not transform consciousness; it only transforms the ideas and concepts to which an individual subscribes. Fundamental transformation can be done only at the level of individual consciousness. Education that transforms must extend beyond knowledge; it must bring wisdom. How does a human being grow in wisdom? This series will explore the notion of education, not to provide knowledge, but to transform. Series $35, Single session $10

Padmanabhan Krishna, PhD, retired professor of physics, lectures internationally about the practical application of science and spirituality. Education, Science and Spirituality

Oct 7 – 10; Oct 14, 15, & 17
Tues - Fri 10 - noon

Science is humanity’s quest for discovering the order that manifests in nature; spirituality is humanity’s quest for discovering order in consciousness. The prevailing sense that science and spirituality are antagonistic arises from the superficial meanings attributed to the two. The resulting serious consequence in education is the notion that one may have either a scientific or a religious mind. Is it possible that both science and spirituality are our quest for truth, the former for the order that manifests in nature and the latter through discovering order in consciousness? Perhaps science and spirituality are complementary quests for truth. This series will explore the possibility of educating a mind that is both scientific and religious. Series $55, week 1 $35, week 2 $25, Single Session $10

Weekend Seminar
Awakening from the Seventh Eternity

Oct 17 - 19
Fri 7:30 - 9, Sat 10 - noon, 2 - 4 , Sun 10 - noon

Mythical symbols and obscure terms of archaic origin describe “moments” just before and after the universe awakens from a long period of inactivity. This fascinating narrative is told in “The Stanzas of Dzyan,” the seven mystical verses that form the basis of the first volume of HP Blavatsky’s The Secret Doctrine. To some extent the Stanzas may reflect the “big bang” theory of modern science, but they also arouse profound feelings of awe and reverence, describing the creation of the universe as a cyclical event inseparable from the presence of consciousness. To discover the sacred meaning within the Stanzas, participants will be encouraged to exercise both cognitive and intuitive faculties. Series $35, Single session $10

David P Bruce, Director of Education at the National Center of the Theosophical Society in America, is a third generation Theosophist. A former technical support expert, he is a third degree black belt in the Korean martial art form of Tae Kwon Do. Also an accomplished percussionist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the America Ballet Theater, and the US Army Band, he produces educational materials for the Theosophical Society and is a frequent presenter at the National Center of the Theosophical Society in America.

4-Day Course
The Quest for the Holy Grail: Myth and Meaning

Oct 21 - 24
Tues - Fri 10 - noon

No traditional tale of the Quest is better known in western civilization than the search for the Holy Grail, the noblest adventure of all those undertaken by knights of King Arthur’s fabled Camelot. Said to be the vessel from which Christ drank at the Last Supper, the Grail has taken on many levels of symbolic and spiritual meaning, and likewise, so has its seeking. In this course we will review traditional versions of the story, compare it to models of the heroic journey by Joseph Campbell and others, then seek to uncover what meaning Grail-questing could have for us. Series $35, Single session $10

It is recommended that students read a version of the Grail story in advance. Two suggested versions are King Arthur and the Grail Quest by John Matthews, and The Holy Grail by Richard Barber.

Robert Ellwood, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Religion at the University of Southern California. He is an international lecturer for the Theosophical Society and has served as Director of the School of the Wisdom at the TS international headquaters in Adyar, India. He has authored numerous books, including Frodo’s Quest: Living the Myth in The Lord of the Rings and Finding Deep Joy, and his articles have appeared in theosophical journals.

Meditation: In Search of the Inner Self

Oct 28 - 31
Tues - Fri 10 - noon

Meditation, always at the heart of the spiritual life, is a way of going within oneself to that inner center of peace, wisdom, and strength. It brings about an inner wholeness as it integrates body, mind, and spirit. Thus, meditation assists us to more effectively manage life’s many challenges and contributes to self-healing and inner growth. The series emphasizes mindfulness (vipassana), simplicity, clear insight, and enjoyment as marks of a deepening connection with our Divine nature. Participants will explore the theoretical basis of meditation, but the emphasis of the series will be on practice. Donations welcome

Meditation in the Light of The Secret Doctrine

Part I: Weekend Exploration
Oct 31 - Nov 2
Fri 7:30 - 9, Sat 10 - noon, 2 - 4
Sun 10 - noon

Part II: 4-Morning Series
Nov 4 - 7
Tues - Fri 10 - noon

The Secret Doctrine, HP Blavatsky's major work, is frequently seen as a treatise of metaphysical teachings or as an esoteric history on the genesis of the Universe. However useful as a source of information, this book has even greater potential as a guide to spiritual practice. As Blavatsky pointed out, its study is meant to awaken the spiritual intuition of the student by appealing to the inner faculties rather than to the ordinary comprehension of the physical brain. "In studying the student must use the eyes of Spiritual Intelligence, else will he fail and his studies will be fruitless." In this seminar we will explore the three basic concepts found in this great work, combined with its “Diagram of Meditation,” with the purpose of nurturing our spiritual practice.

The weekend exploration will focus on the theory and Diagram and the 4-morning series will focus on the meditative practice. Series $65, Week or Weekend $35, Single session $10

Juliana Cesano and Dr Pablo D Sender, members of the Theosophical Society in Argentina, are currently working at the National Headquarters of the Theosophical Society in America and have worked for two years at the Society’s International Headquarters in Adyar, Chennai, India. In Argentina they have served as coordinators of the Young Theosophist Group and as members of the General Council of the Theosophical Society there. They lecture internationally and their articles have appeared in Theosophical journals.

Estudios Sobre La Doctrina Secreta

(This program will be in Spanish only)
Noviembre 17 - 21
Lunes a Viernes 10 - 12 md

Weekend Intensive Workshop
Dream Healing:  Restoring the Soul of Medicine
Jan 16 - 18
Fri 7:30 - 9, Sat 10 - noon, 2 - 4, Sun 10 - noon

For two millennia the ancient Greek tradition of Asklepian dream healing has been elucidating healing principles and practices that became the roots of the western medical and psychological traditions.  Asklepios, the god of healing, and the early physicians, Hippocrates and Galen, were the foundational figures of the healing tradition in the West that gave us the original soul-based psychotherapy.  Through lecture, discussion, experiential exercises, and dream work, participants will explore these foundational mythic and historical figures.  Their contemporary application will be shown in the mythic, spiritual, and naturopathic origins of medicine and psychotherapy, the ancient shamanic and psycho-medical uses of dreams for healing, and the principles and practices contained in these roots.
Series $35, Single session $10

Edward Tick, PhD, holistic psychotherapist and transformational healer, specializes in using psycho-spiritual, cross-cultural, and international reconciliation practices to bring healing to veterans, seekers, communities and nations.  As Founding Director of Soldier’s Heart: Veterans’ Safe Return Programs, Dr Tick leads international educational, healing, and reconciliation journeys to Greece and Viet Nam. He has authored almost 100 articles in psychology, holistic health, mythology, spirituality, literature, philosophy, culture, and travel, and four books, including War and the Soul, 2005 winner of ForeWord Magazine’s Best Psychology Book award.  Dr Tick is on the faculty of Wisdom University and Sage College.

Exploring PTSD as a massive soul wound, we will discuss psycho-spiritual interventions that restore wounded dimensions of soul.  Together we can understand the spirituality inherent in war and how to use that spirituality to heal our veterans and our society. Glory Be! Discovering Christianity’s Sturdy Mystical Roots
Feb 3 - 6
Tues - Fri 10 - noon

Come find food for your soul through the rich heritage of the mystical prayer in the Christian tradition.  With colorful and inspiring examples from the lives of the saints, the purpose of living a mystical life will be examined, not so much for “heaven’s sake”, but for the sake of living soul-full lives that are holy and whole, here and now.  Using Christianity’s mystical roots as a starting point, and concluding with an invitation to integrate contemplative soul-work into everyday life, we will explore the meaning of the holy in a fragmented and often chaotic world.  Come prepared to be amazed at the Christian mystical lineage, and to see prayer and spiritual practice in a wholly new (old) way!  Series $35, Single session $10

Weekend Program
Ancient Wisdom for Modern Minds:  Buddhist Song and Story
Feb 6 - 8
Fri 7:30 - 9, Sat 10 - noon, 2 - 4, Sun 10 - noon

The 2550 year-old teachings of the Buddha arrived in the West and history is repeating itself; wherever Buddhism has touched a new culture, continent, language, or generation, the Buddha's Dharma-teachings have transformed the new culture and also have been transformed by it. Here in the West will psychology make the biggest impact on the creation  of American Buddhism?  Or our bone-deep sense of rugged individualism?  Or our orientation towards scientific proof?  Will it be our technology?  How will Buddhist music from Asia negotiate its encounter with Western sacred music, jazz, folk, and hip-hop? American Buddhist monk, Rev Heng Sure, will share songs and stories from his Buddhist music CD "Paramita: American Buddhist Folk Music." Series $35, Single session $10

Heng Sure, PhD, currently serves as Director of the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery.  Fully ordained in the Mahayana tradition of Chinese Buddhism, Rev Heng Sure, a native of Toledo, Ohio, has dedicated his efforts to World Peace.  He authored With One Heart, Bowing to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, a nine-volume journal of his peace pilgrimage, translated into Chinese and Vietnamese, and two  volumes of correspondence.  Rev Heng Sure teaches at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, California, represents Buddhism on the Global Council of the United Religions Initiative, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Interfaith Center at the Presidio.

The Path of the Bodhisattva
Feb 10 - 13
Tues - Fri 10 – noon

Bodhisattvas, "Awakened Beings," as they appear in the Buddha's teachings, have inspired people to lead selfless, wise, and compassionate lives for centuries. The Path of the Bodhisattva reaches its fullest expression in the Sutras (Scriptures) of the Mahayana tradition. Those texts are now in English and accessible to contemporary seekers of insight.  During this program, specific chapters of the Avatamsaka (Flower Adornment) Sutra will be examined, emphasizing the power of the Buddha's vision of the Bodhisattva Path to bring healing light and spiritual connections to a world that often seems broken and meaningless.  The program will be illustrated with stories from a late 1970s California coast peace pilgrimage.  Series $35, Single session $10

Therapeutic Touch (TT), a contemporary interpretation of several ancient healing practices, is neither faith-healing nor “laying-on of hands,” but is a method of healing based on the theosophical worldview and on science. The technique is gentle, simple to learn, and can be used very effectively with people of all ages. Participants will gain an understanding of the underlying principles of TT, explore the validating research and, through supervised practice, learn beginning skills in the technique.  Series $45, no single sessions

Consciousness, Yoga Psychology, and Nurturing the Soul
April 17 - 19
Fri 7:30 - 9, Sat 10 - noon, 2 - 4, Sun 10 - noon

A paradigm shift in science is evidenced by the rediscovery, within science, of God and soul, accounting for the increasing popularity of yoga, promising  to connect us to both the soul and to God.  The Goswamis will discuss the scientific rediscovery of the soul and God within the framework of  new science’s “soul nurturing,” and introduce the principles and practices of yoga psychology needed for the nurturing of our soul connection. Series $35, Single session $10

Amit Goswami, PhD, quantum physicist featured in the movie What the Bleep Do We Know, adroitly integrates philosophy, cosmology, religion, and psychology to create a new way of thinking about religion and science. In his book, The Visionary Window: A Quantum Physicist’s Guide to Enlightenment, Goswami goes beyond Fritjof Capra’s work in seeing how consciousness affects matter and demonstrates how the power of spiritual practice can be explained through the principles of physics.

Uma Goswami, MD, has practiced child psychiatry in Bangalore, India, for 12 years and is a pioneer of yoga psychology. During the course of her practice, Dr Goswami, an international lecturer, has conducted her own research on the transformation of emotions using yoga therapy, and has a forthcoming book on the subject. She is also an accomplished dancer of Bharatanatyam, a classical dance of India.

Four-Day Program
Psychological Aspects of Our Spiritual Growth
May 12 - 15
Tues - Fri 10 - noon

HP Blavatsky pointed out that our spiritual development depends on the unification of mind and heart, and through realizing the essential divinity within each of us.  Thus, evolution in the theosophical sense means progressive growth in at least three aspects of our nature: the spiritual or monadic; the psychological-intellectual, or human; and the physical-etheric.  Our evolution now is focused in the psychological realm, which means that transformation comes through the mind.  Therefore, to grow spiritually, we need to examine the mind to find out how it operates.  In this 4-morning program we will explore aspects of our spiritual development, taking into consideration the complex septenary constitution of humans and the three streams of evolution: spiritual, psychological, and physical.  Series $35, Single session $10

Terezinha Kind, from Brazil, is President of the Inter-American Theosophical Federation.  She lectures extensively in English and Spanish for the Theosophical Society throughout the world. Weekend Program
Is There a Path to Truth?
May 15 - 17
Fri 7:30 - 9, Sat 10 - noon, 2 - 4, Sun 10 - noon

Ever since J Krishnamurti made his famous declaration, “Truth is a pathless land,” inquirers have contemplated this subject. According to Krishnamurti, certain questions should not be answered promptly, but pondered over and meditated on for hours, days, years, perhaps even lives. A moment of awakening comes for a seeker when the longing for Truth, for becoming wiser, more loving and compassionate, and for serving others turns into a living, guiding force in one’s life.  The long journey toward such an awakening only can start with the first step, here and now.  Series $35, Single session $10

Programa del Fin de Semana
Hay un Sendero Hacia la Verdad?

(This program will be in Spanish only)
Mayo 25 - 29
Lunes a Viernes 10 - 12
